I think we're underestimating the potential of the plot here.
Keep in mind that all the doctors are members of a society that was attempting to bring about the supernatural in humans under government directives.
The patients are all inmates who were scheduled for death row or prisoners who were deemed mentally unstable. They've been the guinea pigs for the strange and odd experiments that have gone on:
Such as:
1) Syrums to induce super human strength
2) Attempts to modify the human eye to give x-ray vision (or heat vision)
3) Attempts to modify the human body for flight
(basically to make super powers real...but ALL of them failed..either totally or partially.)
However now these experiments have been deemed obsolete by the government. The doctors and patients alike have been imprisoned on the island by the soldiers. NO one (including the soldiers) are allowed to leave. The soldiers don't realize it yet that their commanders aren't going to let them leave though.
The main goal of both doctors and patients: Get off the island. However this is hard as patients don't trust the doctors. The doctors seek to use the patients semi-enhanced abilities against the soldiers, and the soldiers have been ordered to kill any and all who resist.
Let the fight for survival begin.
